Foundation Remediation with InSAR – Al-Awali School Bahrain

Project Overview

On 12th July 2024, GeoStruXer was commissioned by MSCEB to design a foundation rectification system for Al-Awali National School in Bahrain, following severe cracking and deformation due to foundation issues. Using advanced 3D soil–structure interaction (SSI) analysis, GeoStruXer evaluated the foundation under various scenarios, identifying significant deficiencies in the footings. Two repair options were proposed: micropile underpinning and geopolymer grouting. The study provided key insights into the foundation’s performance and recommended strategies, enabling informed decision-making.The project aimed to harness existing soil conditions while ensuring enhanced structural performance and sustainability.

Challenges

Geotechnical Deficiencies

Excessive settlement, differential tilt, and bearing pressure led to structural failures and load redistribution.

Extension Feasibility

Assessing the impact of a planned extension on an already compromised foundation.

Integrated Modelling

Predicting soil–structure interaction during construction through coupled geotechnical and structural analysis.

Rectification Strategy

Designing a cost-effective repair system with minimal disruption.

Solution Approach

Advanced SSI Analysis

3D FEA integrated superstructure, foundation, and ground behaviour, considering staged construction and non-linear soil properties.

Model Calibration

Improved accuracy by calibrating soil models with field test data.

Coupled Models

Geotechnical deformation data informed structural force redistribution for a holistic design.

Value Engineering & Sustainability

Precision

Accurate assessments of load transfer and foundation behaviour under real-world conditions.

Cost-Effectiveness

Micropiling avoided extensive foundation replacement, saving time and money.

Alternative Solutions

Geopolymer grouting offered a minimally invasive, flexible option for rectification.
